2026-27 NHL Schedule: Complete Week-by-Week Season Guide

The 2026-27 NHL Schedule kicks off something the league hasn’t done in over three decades. The National Hockey League announced that the 2026-27 regular-season schedule will commence on Tuesday, Sept. 29 with a tripleheader broadcast exclusively on ESPN in the U.S., and a doubleheader on Sportsnet in Canada. That alone would be a normal opening night. What makes this season different is the number of games on the calendar.

This is the first 84-game NHL season since 1993-94. Every team gets two extra games. Every fan gets two extra nights of hockey. And the league is treating the milestone accordingly.

Opening Night Starts With a Banner

The season’s opening night is highlighted by the Carolina Hurricanes raising their second Stanley Cup championship banner on ESPN before facing the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center at 5 p.m. ET. That’s not a small way to kick off an 84-game season — the reigning two-time champions, raising banner number two, under the lights on national TV, against the team they’ve built one of the league’s sharper rivalries with.

Four more games follow that night across ESPN and Sportsnet, giving fans ten teams in action before the clock even strikes 9 p.m. ET.

Why 84 Games Changes Everything

The 2026-27 schedule – expanded to 84 games per team – features an all-time NHL high of 1,344 regular-season games. That’s two more divisional matchups per team than fans have seen in any season since the mid-90s, and it stretches the campaign out to a long, grinding haul before the league wraps the regular season Saturday, April 10. Every single one of the 32 teams is in action on that final day — no quiet exits, no early finishes. Everybody plays out the string together.

The Outdoor and Special Games to Circle

A packed regular season still carves out room for spectacle. On Sunday, October 25, the Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens will hit the ice outdoors in the 2026 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg — one of three outdoor games on this year’s calendar, alongside the Winter Classic in Salt Lake City on Dec. 31 and the Stadium Series in Arlington, Texas in late February. Throw in the return of NHL All-Star Weekend after a two-year hiatus, and this season has more non-standard hockey nights than any in recent memory.

Why the Extra Two Games Matter

An 84-game season doesn’t sound like a dramatic shift on paper. In practice, it’s two more data points on every team’s playoff push, two more chances for a bubble team to climb into the wild card, two more nights for a struggling club to turn its season around. The last time the league played this many games, the format lasted only two seasons before reverting. Whether it becomes permanent or stays a one-year experiment, 2026-27 is the proving ground.
